The Moot Proposition: Matrix Corporation vs. LAVAS
The 2026 moot problem involves a complex dispute between Matrix Corporation Limited and LAVAS Multimedia Private Limited. Matrix, the commercial arm of the Indica Space Research Organisation (ISRO), entered into an agreement with LAVAS in 2005 to lease S-Band spacecraft transponders.
In 2011, Matrix terminated the agreement citing force majeure after the Government of Indica decided not to provide orbital slots in S-Band for commercial activities. This led to multiple international arbitrations and substantial awards against Matrix.
Subsequently, the Government initiated winding-up proceedings against LAVAS under the Companies Act, alleging it was formed through fraud. While the Supreme Court of Indica upheld the dissolution, LAVAS has now petitioned the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA). The key legal issues involve international investment law, bilateral investment treaties, and principles of natural justice. Notably, the laws of the State of Indica are considered pari materia to the laws of India.
