About the Organisers

Gokhale Education Society (GES) runs over 140 institutions across Maharashtra and is a pioneer in professional education, including law and management. N. B. Thakur Law College is one of its flagship law institutions and is known for its strong focus on trial court practice and professional training.

This competition is held in memory of Late Advocate D. T. Jaibhave, a respected trial court lawyer of Nashik, and other distinguished members of the local Bar who contributed significantly to trial advocacy.


About the Competition

The National Moot-Trial and Judgment Writing Competition has been conducted annually since 2006 and the 2026 edition marks its 18th year.

Unlike conventional moot courts, this competition simulates real trial court practice, where participants perform as:

  • Advocates

  • Trial Judges

  • And conduct examination of witnesses

The objective is to expose students to actual courtroom procedures, drafting, evidence, and judicial reasoning.


Eligibility

  • Only students from Bar Council of India recognised law colleges may participate

  • Students must be enrolled in a 3-Year or 5-Year LL.B. programme

  • Only one team per college is allowed

  • Participation is limited to the first 40 teams


Team Composition

Each team must consist of three students:

  • Two Moot Advocates (for Plaintiff/Prosecution and Defendant/Accused)

  • One Moot Judge (who will write the judgment)

Two witnesses will be provided by the host college.


Structure of the Competition

Rounds

  • Preliminary Round – 14 February 2026

  • Final Round – 15 February 2026

  • Semi-Finals may be conducted if required

Problem Allocation

  • Preliminary Round: Teams choose Problem 1 or Problem 2

  • Final Round: Problem 3

  • Judgment Writing: Based on the problem chosen for the preliminary round


Dress Code

  • Advocates: White dress, black coat and advocate’s band

  • Moot Judge: White dress, black coat, gown and band


Language

Trials and judgments may be conducted in:
English / Marathi / Hindi (to be informed in advance)


Oral Rounds Format

Each team gets 40 minutes total:

  • 30 minutes for trial (including examination of two witnesses)

  • 10 minutes for arguments

Exceeding time without permission will attract negative marking.


Memorial Requirements

Each team must submit:

  • One memorial for the Preliminary Round

  • One memorial for the Final Round

Format:

  • A4 size

  • Arial, Font size 12

  • Must include:

    • In civil matters: Plaint and Written Statement

    • In criminal matters: FIR and Charge Sheet

  • Runner-Up Team – ₹7,500 + Trophy + Law Books

  • Best Judgment – ₹7,500

  • Best Advocate – ₹7,500

  • Best Lady Advocate – ₹7,000

  • Best Cross-Examination – ₹7,500

  • Best Examination of Witness – ₹5,000

  • Best Memorial (Runner-up) – ₹2,000

Multiple individual special awards are also announced.
All participants receive certificates.


Moot Problems

Problem 1 (Criminal Trial)

An assault occurred in 2024. FIR was delayed, investigation completed, and charge-sheet filed. Teams must draft FIR and Charge-Sheet and conduct a criminal trial.

Problem 2 (Civil Trial)

A dispute over property between siblings involving possession, sale deeds, and adverse possession. Teams must draft a civil suit, written statement, and conduct trial.

Problem 3 (Final Round – NI Act)

A cheque dishonour dispute involving a partnership firm, loan, and Section 138 NI Act prosecution. Teams must develop facts and conduct full trial.
