Established in 1997, NLIU is one of India’s premier National Law Universities, widely recognised for academic excellence in legal education, policy, and research.

Centre for Financial Markets and Regulatory Systems (CFMRS)
CFMRS is an academic and research centre of NLIU dedicated to financial governance, capital markets regulation, investor protection, and regulatory policy.


Concept and Objectives

The Capital Tank is a first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary investment challenge inspired by the Shark Tank model. The competition is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world financial and legal practice.

The event aims to:

Build financial and investment literacy

Promote entrepreneurial and strategic thinking

Develop understanding of valuation, funding structures, and compliance

Integrate law, finance, and public policy into a single competitive framework



Structure of the Competition

The event is conducted over two days.

Day 1 – Learning & Training Sessions

Participants undergo structured, interactive learning sessions led by professionals from finance and corporate law.
Key areas covered include:

Startup funding stages (Seed, Series A–C, IPOs)

Legal documentation and compliance (term sheets, due diligence, SEBI regulations, Companies Act)

Valuation principles and financial modelling



Day 2 – The Capital Tank (Investment Simulation)

Participants act as founders of fictional startups and pitch their ventures before a panel of judges (“Sharks”).

Each team receives a detailed Case File containing:

Financial statements

Equity offered

Risk factors

Business projections


Teams must:

Propose a funding strategy

Justify valuation

Negotiate equity

Defend their pitch under expert scrutiny


Judges include corporate lawyers, investors, financial professionals, and academic experts.


Eligibility and Team Composition

Who may apply:

Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral students

Academicians, scholars, researchers

Legal, financial and policy professionals

Consultants and practitioners


Team size:

Individual participants or teams of up to three members


Selection:

Shortlisting based on Curriculum Vitae (CV)


Registration Details

Fee: ₹8,000 per team

The fee includes:

Registration Process:

1. Submit the Google Form before the deadline


2. Shortlisting result within one week


3. Selected teams complete final registration and payment
