NUALS Kochi -  National Trial Advocacy Competition 2026

The NUALS National Trial Advocacy Competition 2026 offers an important platform for law students to experience courtroom procedures and apply legal theory to practical trial settings. This edition focuses on India’s newly enacted criminal laws, making it especially relevant for developing practical advocacy skills.


Key Dates and Venue

The competition is held in two stages.
Phase I, the Qualifier Rounds, will take place online on 10 January 2026 through the Google Meet platform.
Phase II, the Advanced Rounds, will be conducted offline at the NUALS Campus in Kochi from 30 January to 1 February 2026.
The last date for registration is 25 December 2025, and the results of the Qualifier Rounds will be communicated to the registered email addresses on 12 January 2026.


Eligibility and Team Composition

Participation is open to students enrolled in three-year or five-year LL.B. programmes at institutions recognised by the Bar Council of India.
Each team may consist of a maximum of three members, including two Speakers and one Researcher. Teams may also participate with two members, in which case one Speaker will serve as the Researcher.
Each institution may send up to two teams, and the competition is limited to sixty-four teams on a first-come basis.
Teams must maintain anonymity at all stages, using only their allotted Competition Code and not revealing their names, academic year, or institution.


Competition Structure

Phase I is the Qualifier Round conducted online. Only the Researchers of the participating teams will attend this round. It follows an oral descriptive question-and-answer format, lasting fifteen minutes per team. Sixteen teams will be selected from this phase for the Advanced Rounds.

Phase II is held offline and consists of two Preliminary Rounds, followed by the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and the Final Round. The top eight teams from the Preliminary Rounds move to the Quarter-Finals, and the subsequent rounds are conducted in a knockout format.
The trial proposition will be based on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023.


Registration and Accommodation Fees

The base registration fee for all teams is ₹2,360, payable by 25 December 2025.
Teams advancing to the Advanced Rounds must pay an additional fee of ₹3,540 between 12 January and 20 January 2026.
Accommodation will be available at ₹500 per participant per night, with further details to be provided through a Google Form.
All registration fees are non-refundable.



Awards

Awards include a Trophy and ₹36,000 for the Best Trial Advocacy Team, and a Trophy with ₹24,000 for the Runners-up Team.
The Best Trial Advocate will receive a Trophy and ₹10,000, and the Runner-up Trial Advocate will receive a Trophy and ₹7,500.
The Best Researcher and the Runner-up Researcher will be awarded ₹7,500 and ₹5,000 respectively, along with trophies.
Certificates of Merit will be awarded to the top sixteen teams, and all participating teams will receive digital participation certificates.
