About the Competition and Organizers

The Dinesh Vyas Memorial Government Law College National Legal Essay Writing Competition 2025–26 is conducted by the Magazine Committee of Government Law College (GLC), Mumbai. The competition commemorates the late Mr. Dinesh Vyas, Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court and GLC alumnus (Batch of 1967), and is supported by the Dinesh Vyas Trust.

Government Law College, established in 1855, is one of India’s oldest legal education institutions with a notable record of producing judges, lawyers, statesmen, and activists. The Magazine Committee publishes the annual college magazine titled “méLAWnge,” which traces its publication history to 1930.

Competition Topics

Participants must write an essay on any one of the following themes:

– Refugees Beyond Borders: The need for uniform asylum legislation in view of the Manipur–Myanmar crisis
– Collegium appointments and systemic bias: caste-gender imbalances in higher judicial appointments
– Inconsistencies in compensation under fatal accident claims in India
– The constitutional debate surrounding the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025
– Gubernatorial authority and Centre-State equilibrium with reference to 2025 INSC 481

Eligibility and Timeline

Eligibility Criteria:

– Open to students of any year enrolled in a 5-year integrated law programme, 3-year LL.B. course, or LL.M.
– Students must be from a recognized university in India or possess an equivalent qualification abroad for the academic year 2023-24
– Co-authorship is permitted, with a maximum of two authors per essay

– Announcement: 4 December 2025
– Registration Deadline: 27 December 2025
– Submission Deadline: 5 January 2026
– Date of Result Declaration: To be notified

Submission Guidelines

– Language: English
– Word Limit: 5000 words (including footnotes)
– Font: Times New Roman, Size 12
– Footnotes/Citation Font: Times New Roman, Size 10
– Line Spacing: 1.5; Footnotes 1.0
– Citation Format: Indian Law Institute (ILI) style
– Page Setup: A4 size, one-inch margins on all sides, justified text
– Originality: Content must be unpublished, with plagiarism not exceeding 15%
– AI-generated or AI-rephrased work will result in disqualification
– Submission must be made in both Word (.doc/.docx) and PDF formats
– File name must reflect the Team Code only
– No personal identification is allowed within the document
